Ruin is a prototype for a physics-based puzzle game where the player must knock down towers to defeat enemies that threaten their trade caravan. This can be achieved by placing a variety of different bombs with varying mechanical effects or clicking to sap blocks from the towers, causing them to collapse.
The biggest design challenge for Ruin was creating levels which focused on allowing players to solve them with the resources at hand and ensuring puzzles were unable to be solved by brute force alone.
This was an especially daunting task considering the number of different emergent systems that the player could use to solve a given puzzle, as well as physics interactions being such an integral part of our game's core design. Balancing player resources with the number of obstacles they had to overcome was key.
The prototype contained only a small sample of what our final game could potentially be, so most of our mechanics are present throughout five or so levels to showcase each of them off individually.
